He became famous because he survived a night alone on the mountain and also, because he was rescued, while David Sharp died some days earlier being in similar circumstances. Apa Sherpa was the first one to reach the summit of Mount Everest 21 times (by 2011). Lhakpa Tenzing Sherpa was born in the early 1960s in a village in the Everest region of Nepal near the Chinese border. His exact age is unknown, but during a 2003 interview, he estimated it to be 40.

Usha Bista (born in 1985) is a Nepali women who almost died on Mt Everest. She was saved by other mountaineers after others have left her which is why her portrait is part of “Into thin Air”.
