In the past I needed to go to harbors or scrapyards to shoot photographs of rust and paint. I wanted to call out to people: Don’t remove rust, don’t derust!
25 years after my first series on this subject (see here) I took the camera and focused on scrap, worn, stressed and overloaded subjects.
The following is work in progress.
Art is either plagiarism or revolution
Marcel Duchamp
Rust and Paint 10
Photograph, 2020
Back a hundred years at times of Marcel Duchamp rust has been everywhere. Today, you could place rusted railway buffers in your flat – like me: Things with rust and peeling paint are a ready-made.
But rust and peeling paint are regaining everyday life. Shoes, cloths, cars, walls: meanwhile almost everything can be shaped in nice rust retro. Spray paint cars or guitars, paint walls or paintings with rust effects (“rust and paint flakes”) … One can also wrap cars in rust and peeling paint foil („car wrapping“). Grunge industrial looks of old peeling paint on rough and rusty corroded metal surface can be done by DIY easily.

You have even less work if you take your inspiration from my photos. They can easily be displayed without getting dirty hands.
